This “Research in Focus” highlights a landmark study validating SiMPEDIA’s oncoplastic breast simulator, Gaby, a novel simulator for therapeutic mammoplasty. As competency-based surgical education evolves, this study demonstrates how simulation can provide structured, measurable training for advanced techniques like vertical scar therapeutic mammoplasty, vital in managing patients with large tumour-to-breast volume ratios.
Breast surgeons collaborated with SiMPEDIA to adapt its existing breast simulator to allow therapeutic mammoplasty. A modified Delphi approach was used to create a Competency Assessment Tool (CAT). Surgeons with varying operative experience performed simulated vertical scar therapeutic mammoplasty. Procedures were videotaped and independently rated against CAT by three experts. Specimen radiographs and volumetric analysis were performed.
This study marks a major milestone for SiMPEDIA’s oncoplastic training suite, validating Gaby our multifunctional oncoplastic breast simulator as both a training and assessment tool for therapeutic mammoplasty. The inclusion of structured volumetric analysis and a bespoke competency framework (CAT) places SiMPEDIA’s solution at the forefront of evidence-based simulation in breast surgery.
For training programs worldwide, SiMPEDIA’s oncoplastic simulator offers:
This work cements SiMPEDIA’s position as a leader in oncoplastic simulation. As demand for oncoplastic competency grows, SiMPEDIA is poised to set the standard for surgical excellence in oncoplastic breast conserving simulation.
